The Facts About A Plant Terrarium

It is a known fact that plants live better in an outdoor environment, so a plant terrarium is needed for those plants that are kept indoors.  If an outside environment is not possible, then a man- made atmosphere, that represents the outside, is necessary. This indoor “outside environment” is better known as a plant terrarium. However, it should be rather airtight, so as not to let in moisture.  Plants that grow slowly are best for terrariums. The reason is that they will not dominate the terrarium as quickly as if they were fast growing.

A plant terrarium is similar to a “miniature natural world”.  It eventually takes on its own climate, atmosphere, as well as environment. Plants are like all other living organism, they need sunlight, air, and water along with food or some type of nourishment.

There are 2 types of terrariums:

  1. Open Terrariums

Open terrariums require quite a bit of nurturing.

  1. Closed Terrariums

A closed terrarium does not require a lot of care. In fact, it has been documented that the less you bother it, the better and the healthier the plants. Closed terrariums are great for those busy executives who work a lot, but still want to be involved in having nature. Terrariums recycle the moisture that is in the air, which is one reason that they do not need a lot of care. Individuals who have little or no gardening skills seem to be successful in maintaining a plant terrarium, which is an advantage of having one.  Some plants are more equipped to survive in a terrarium than others. Those plants that you might want to put in your terrarium are ivy, ferns (small), Brumeliads, and mosses. They all seem to live quite well.

There are ways of planting that will endure more of a healthy existence to your plants, as follows:

  • It is better if there is about ½ “ of very small gravel at the bottom of your plant terrarium
  • ‘For best results you might consider tingeing the top with a  sprinkle of charcoal, although this is  an optional step
  • Potting soil should be your next step
  • The plants are ready to be placed in the soil
  • Water is essential

A terrarium is rather simple, which is its selling point. It is important to not over water your plants. You definitely should not fertilize them, however if they grow bushy, feel free to clip or pinch off the ends to the desired length.  About the only thing that you might need to do is to add a little new potting soil. This will add nutrients to the plants, and make them healthier and stronger, from time to time.

Plant terrariums can range in size from small to very large areas. The clear “window-like” containers or enclosings seem to work the best, since these casings showcase the plants in regard to their growth. It is very important that a terrarium should be placed in a lighted location; however it should never be in the direct path of sunlight.
